I have worked at GaneshaSpeaks for 6+ years as a Senior Astrologer and know most people in the team. The advise you get from there will not be wrong generally; unless, you and your astrologers stars are not right at the time.
As far as expiry is considered, there is no such thing. The thing is, if the gem is used for long; it will absorb negative energies from the wearer and the surroundings. This is why after every 4 years you need to cleanse the gemstone and revitalize it.
